Apart from Harold Wilson, who said a simple "No" the the request for British troops in Vietnam, every single British PM since WW2 acts as if they worked for the US government, rather than the British people, and agrees to every demand. While we are grateful to the US for the help they gave us in WW2, how long before this notional debt is repaid ? When can we get up off our knees ?
Or is there some other secret obligation or agreement, about which we know nothing, which ties us to this foreign continent half a world away ? Apparently we have to buy Trident from them, but are not allowed to use is without their permission - does anyone know what's going on ? Answers from both sides welcome.

DAR - we did not hand you anything. You fought - and won - a war of independence, wrote your own constitution, and quite right too. I am a Brit, but on holiday in Australia at the moment, and I find your remark about boomerangs racist and ignorant. What on earth do they teach you lot in US schools ?

DAR - no sense of humour ? Well, I'm amused by your ignorance and disdain for the rest of the world. But saddened, too.

Harold Wilson with all his faults came from a class of people where bullying only makes them dig their heels in and be more stubborn These public school types are the opposite it turns them on .they go nipping out of parliament at lunch time for a quick correction session and then they feel ready to face the world
in all seriousness i havn`t got a clue.but it also seems more than a bit dodgy to me

I don't know about race relations. So long has we have guys like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson running around perpetuating the racial issues from the 1960's, we'll have problems and the hate will only continue. Now, I will say that Obama has made a fool of himself and is acting like an immature teenager running around spending his opinions on petty issues that come up; like the cop/professor thing you mentioned. He and his administration regularly attack organizations and individuals. He needs to end his obsession with micromanaging and deal with things on a national and international level like a President is supposed to do. His undergrad is in political science, but obviously he's never read the federalist papers.

Not a case of following the leader here......... more like we come from a common background and have the same or very similar values.
Remember a Democracy is actually a dictatorship until the next election, so we have got be very very careful who we vote for.
I don't remember anyone asking me about invading the Falklands or Iraq .............. but at least we can evict governments every 4 years or so if they screw up!

You overstate your case. Of course we have had disagreements with the Americans over the years, particularly when socialists were in power in Britain. Even Tony Blair is open about his disagreements with the US administration on environmental issues.
The transatlantic alliance is crucial to our prosperity and security. Look at that pathetic continent accross the English channel and ask yourself if we should put any faith in those clowns?

As an American I see it differently. More like we are continuing Britain's policies which you handed to us, and isn't really about time the Aussies stop playing with their boomerangs and take over? It would be nice to be the helpless looking statesman country complaining that our government just does whatever the Australians ask us to do.....
