I'm moving in with a friend, but it may not happen because of issues with laws. They say they have to get a lawyer and go to court and have my mother's house inspected before they can give custody to my friend's parents? My mother's perfectly okay with all this because moving in with them will give me a chance to go to a great school in a different state, but we don't know the details and it probably won't happen if there's all that to worry about.
So what are the actual rules about this kind of thing?

I tried looking elsewhere and can't find anything on the subject.

Let's clarify a few things, how old are you? Where do you live now and where would you be moving to? Is your mother signing over parental rights or just signing temporary custody to these people in case of a medical emergency? If you are moving to this other house, the other house has to be checked out first and your mother must sign temporary custody of you to these people . Need more details but this is standard at least where I am, PA, because they need to make sure you are in a safe home and that you and your mother understand what you are doing, that is why court would need to be involved.

Depends on what state you are living in. You need to seek legal counsel, not half-baked ideas of the people on here.
