How do I improve my oral communication skills. I tried reading more, looking up words in the dictionary, but no matter what I do I get mental blocks and stuck for words, it is like there is nothing in my memory...it is like my brain is empty. I even have a degree but sound like I do not have more than grade 10.

I was the same way. Things got better for me when I did more active listening. Don't force your way into a conversation. Listening more helped me formulate what I really want to say. Don't rush. Take your time. Only speak when you have something value added to say. You will find the words will just role off your tongue.

Don't just read the dictionary. That will get you nowhere. There is a book called "Words You Should Know" by David Olsen, 1991. A great vocab builder. Has 1200 simple one line definitions and uses the words in example sentences. Good luck.

They say practice makes perfect. Find a few sentences that you like and can be used as responses in different situations and practice them. Such as "I find that the weather this time of year is so unpredictible." or "I enjoy the warmth that the sunshine provides." Simple things but said at the proper time....Find the right ones for you to use. Good Luck

People are reflexive even in language use. What you must do is surround yourself with people who use those words and can articulate and learn how to train your brain to use those words. Try joining your local toastmasters and get tips about public speaking and debate from them.

Its not understanding the words that are a problem but understanding how to use them more frequently and effortlessly.

Good luck!

sounding educated is basically just having a wider vocabulary. i have the worst memory ever, and yet i've been told i am very articulate and am always chosen to speak publicly on behalf of groups (much to my horror lol).
all i can recommend to you is to read. thats all i did, and it doesnt even have to be novels or anything too difficult. just start off reading when you have the chance, on the train, or wherever. you'll notice that you will pick up so much just from reading.
good luck!

Maybe if you start writing a lot...instead of reading, let the words come from your brain, instead reading from a book. Just sit down, relax, reflect about how the day went..about anything, and just write..you can pop in a few big words here and there. lol.

Well, to be honest with you, it doesn't matter that you sound that educated. You probably have some sort of talking problem. I know a woman who says "wheels" as "reers". She is easy to understand, maybe you can try speech therapy.

its practice. but some people are just less articulate than others. it doesnt mean you're a dumb person.
Look at George Bush, he became president and speaks like a 6th grader. (i'm hoping he's not dumb)
