What free anti-virus software is better to install on an older PC using Windows 98 SE for it's OS? I am trying to decide between AOL Active Virus Shirld developed by Kaspersky, and, Grisoft's AVG Anti-Virus Free 7.1. Most of the revues I have been able to find say the AOL system is better. But, when I ask around, most people say the AVG system. I am totally confused. Please help if you have experience with either system. Thanks!!

Protect your PC from both known and unknown virus attacks, spyware, Trojan horses and malware with AOL's free anti-virus software, Active Virus Shield. This comprehensive anti-virus software installs quickly, works fast, always stays on and updates automatically every hour. Plus, it takes traditional virus scanning methods and combines them with advanced technology to help detect and protect against malicious programs that can infect your PC and important files before they are infected

AOL Active Virus Shield is better than AVG. Instead of developing their own antivirus scanner, AOL contracted Kaspersky to develop their antivirus scanner for them. Kaspersky is widely respected in the security software market. Their products are always in the top tier. Grisoft's AVG antivirus is a decent product; however, it has subpar detection and removal. Here are 2 reviews from PC World Magazine which has rigorously tested AVG.

1. "Review: Free Antivirus Software" -- written by Mary Landesman (http://antivirus.about.com/od/antivirussoftwarereviews/a/freeav.htm)

"Guide Review - AVG Free Edition
Like any scanner we feature in our reviews, AVG has been certified to remove 100% of in-the-wild viruses - but results with zoo viruses are a low 81% and those same tests resulted in 11 false positives (detection of viruses in non-infected, legitimate files). Despite these drawbacks, AVG Free Edition has a long list of admirers who will be quick to point out that tests reflect a snapshot in time and may not always be indicative of future or past performance.

AVG Free Edition does not provide adware/spyware removal (though it is available in the paid version of the product). As with other free antivirus scanners, support options are limited to online help forums and knowledgebases.

AVG Free Edition can be used in Safe Mode, a definite plus for removing stubborn infectors or cleaning a system that might otherwise be unable to boot into Windows.

2. "Top Antivirus Software" -- written by Narasu Rebbapragada (http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,124490-page,1/article.html)

"None of the three free antivirus products tested for the "The New Virus Fighters" ranked highly, but Grisoft's AVG Antivirus Free Edition holds the distinct honor of having placed last among all ten paid and free contenders due to a clunky interface, the omission of significant features, and below-average performance....[more]."

aol is better,,but it takes a LOT of memory and is VERY dominating

no other virus program is allowed to run by it

you should get aol
install

get it from the OFFICIAL site....
http://daol.aol.com/safetycenter

need an aol account

NOT from ANY other site
once you have completed it ,you can get avg too
running both is not a problem ,contrary to what many say

avg is a good one
but for 98,i would go with aol
