Have it appraised first, believe it or not collectors of antiques like old looking items w/"patina" (crustiness, dirt, rust) if there's no great value, then "MAAS" is the best stuff out there bar-none........

Have it appraised first, you may kill the value if you clean it. Anyway, you don't clean steel; you polish it. You can remove the heavy rust with naval jelly (Lowe's, Home Depot, etc). To make it like new, you will have to polish it like was done to it when it was made. Lots of elbow grease.

I am in the cleaning business and I have a lot of collectibles that I need to clean regularly to keep them from tarnishing.
Sometimes placing a thin coat of W-D 40 will keep it from tarnishing.
and here is our secret!
Try this cleaning cloth. You have to buy in packages of 5 but they are only like $3 bucks a piece. I have ordered them and use them on everything, especially cleaning windows and clean mirrors. They are made out of tiny fibers. They are guaranteed not to scratch and all you do is rinse the cloth under water, wring it out and wipe ANY surface with no streaks or scratch. Use em over and over. I have not thrown one away yet!
I even waxed my car with it! I am sold on this ...I encourage you to try it out.

Stop slaying Dragons, and you shouldn't have a problem with tarnished blood stains. Actually try using Scotch-Brite by 3M, pick a fine very fine grit, scrub the sword down, use a good gun oil, wipe it down with a good fine layer, and you should be fine. To much oil will look as bad as tarnish.
