Only once, and I didn't really embarass myself (though a friend did). There's a gentleman at my school who's a psychologist at the health office, but he also runs the safezone program, and was involved with several other queer-oriented projects. It was that, more than anything else that really just allowed me to make the assumption (coupled with the fact that as a true ally, he does not constantly re-affirm his heterosexuality). A friend actually said something about "well, you know as a gay man" and he just kinda said "Uh..what? Oh. Yeah. I'm not." And embarassment was all there was, cause he was (obviously) really cool about it.

Why be embarrassed? There's nothing wrong with being gay.

But maybe your embarrassment actually stems from the fact that you revealed that you were attempting to categorize the person. Chalk it up to a learning experience.

No, but I have assumed chicks were pregnant...
but...they were just waaaay overweight...

[i felt horrible but had to laugh because they were offended. i mean, at least i didn't say, damn, you're a fat cow lose some weight, ya know? that would have offended me more than someone asking if i was expecting]

It was so funny and he told us he wasn't gay! LMAO!
