Tell your parents what you saw. The guy may have be still laying there. You need to call the police and make a report. In time you may have to go to court and tell what you saw. Standing up for someone in a bad situation is the thing to do. The knowledge that you have may take sthese thugs off the streets. To be brave os to do something that is hard to do but you know is the right thing to do. That you are even caring is a start most people, adults also would not care. One step at a time. And good luck. My daughters went thru a similar thing and the guy was put away for 15 years.

With three against one there is nothing you could have done to help the person being beaten. Also you don't know why he was being beaten - what if he was a drug dealer and the three guys beating him up were the brother or friends of some little kid this drug dealer (the one being beaten)got hooked.

The best thing to do is go home and call the police - tell them what you saw - describe the three beaters and let law enforcement handle it the rest of the way.

Even if the three guys were beating up a drug dealer??? Yes, no one in a free society has the right to be judge, jury, and executioner. A society without laws falls into anarchy.

Though it's certainly laudable for you to want to have done something, it is a lot safer for you to do what you did... my guess is the guys were older than you, bigger, and a lot stronger. It's better for you to run off instead of getting physically involved, or yelling at them to stop. What you could've done is go back into the store and tell someone, so the manager would break them up or the cops would come. The world really is like that, sorry hun, but you can take comfort from the fact that there are also many very good people not unlike yourself.

Real life violence is in no way similar to the violence you see in movies. Yes it might influence their behaviour, but the violence you see on the big screen is fake. What you saw was very real and your instinct was to run away to a safe place. Next time you see something like this, turn around and go back inside. Tell the clerk about the situation thats going on outside and tell him that you want to notify the cops. I'm sure he'll be more than glad to pick up a phone and call. And if the cops can't do nothing about it, at least you'll feel good knowing that you tried to help.

Talk to your parents about this. I am sure that they can give you some comforting advice. That, rest assured is not what the world is like. It is of course more violent in certain cities, but overall its just a few bad apples that make things bad. You did the right thing by running home. Maybe the only thing would be to get a description of the people and call the police. The main thing is that you are all right!

We all do (or fail to do) things that cause us to feel some discomfort.

Most people would probably do exactly what you did, had they been in your position.

Had you been better able to handle the fear you felt you could have done something to help the boy that was getting beat on.

If you had a cell phone... you could have called 911 and reported the incident so police would come.

If there were any adults nearby... you could have run to them and told them what you saw so they could go stop the violence.

you are obviously a good and sweet person. please don't be too hard on yourself. they are right - you would have been in great danger if you had tried to intevene. yes you could have called 911 but everyone deals with fear or shock differently. you brain didn't do what it would do with hindsight. you are only 13 and (at the risk of patronizing you) a child. it's scary to see evidence so close of how horrible the world can be so you should get this off your chest. ring a helpline, talk to your parents or a teacher or school counsellor.
i'm sure the person is ok and they will get through it themselves. it sounds heartless but they will look after themselves as best they can.
try not to let this diminish your joy at the good things in life. it's tough to learn young i know.

This is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which basically means you cant believe the trauma you have just seen. theres nothing you can do about it. Its not your fault. Theres bad, bad people in the world and that's never, ever going to change. I wish it would. People in wars have the same thing. Seen too many things they should'nt have seen, done too many things they shouldnt have done. Their brain cant process the pure horror, the pure fear in their eyes. Just keep on living and if you still need help, go and get help from a school counsellor or psychiatrist.

What you could have done...what you should have done...is to report it to the police...dial 911 ASAP.

No, you shouldn't have done something foolish like confront these evil thugs in person. People have been killed for less.

Yes, the world is really like this...and worse. But it's also full of beauty, truth, goodness and solutions. Be a part of what's good, Darlin'.

Your reaction was normal and your safety had to be considered. We all make decisions based on our fears at the time. Next time it happens go to the nearest shop and ask the assistant to phone the police. There was no need for you to get directly involved because you are a girl and only 13.
