Among the three species, the common (or plains) zebra has 26 stripes per side, the mountain zebra has 43 stripes per side, and the Grevy's zebra has 80 stripes per side.

Exactly, I agree. It varies. No two zebras are alike, just as no two snowflakes are alike. I mean I'm sure they've figured up an average, just as how many hairs does the average human being have, but there is no set amount of stripes.
