why do people read into the magazines and the hollywood image of perfection so much? it almost makes the dating scene next to impossible to navigate, and puts pressure on people to look good all the time. why can't people just relax and let their inner qualitys shine through?

I almost think it's human nature to thrive for perfection, whether it be with looks, careers, partners, etc. Hollywood makes people believe they aren't beautiful unless they are skinny and flawless, which totally isn't true. That's why people can't relax and be themselves. They are too afraid of what other people will think of them if they let their true colors show. True beauty is found on the inside and if people can't see that, then they are what I class as "shallow". I can tell you from personal experience that I met a great man who has the best personality of anyone I know, and to me, he's perfect inside and out. It's all about perspective. Dating someone just because you think they look good will get you absolutely nowhere, trust me!

First impressions almost always have to do with physical appearances. And what a person is like on the outside is always there for you to see, while what they are in side, the real person, is hidden.
Of course a classic beauty becomes ugly the minute he or she reveals an ugly self...whiny, demanding, selfish, irrational, weak, etc.
The way to get around this is to say, "Man she looks great. I wonder what she's really like?" Then find out. Get to know the person. Hang out, talk about things, observe the person's behavior...what they say and do. Gradually, the real self will reveal itself. And when it does, the person won't seem so beautiful anymore. And of course, the opposite can happen, a plain person will turn out to be a raving beauty because of many inner strengths.

yes, this really sucks. better looks means better chance of getting a mate and a job.getting to know the personality takes time, but by looks, one can generate a profile in split second.

i think it has become increasingly clear (at least to me) that most people have no inner substance. humans kind of suck. that being said, what else is there besides aesthetics?
