go to the library and get a copy of the overstreet price guide. its more complete.

Go to Wikipedia, you can find pretty detailed information on just about ANY comic book character in the known universe!!!

To my knowledge, there is no comprehensive list of every comic book character ever. Your best bet is to look up each title you're curious about individually, either on Wikipedia, a fansite or the publisher's website. (For example, if you want a comprehensive list of "X-Men," there's one on UncannyXmen.net, and it also has a detailed and illustrated proile for each character)
