I had a goldfish and 2 plecos in an aquarium and the goldfish died the other day. My mom mentioned that the plecos might not have enough to eat now that the goldfish wasn't making the aquarioum dirty. I've always fed them 1/2 an algae wafer every night. Should I give them a whole wafer, or should I give them to someone I know who has an aquarium? I just don't want them to starve to death.

Or should I just get another fish, and what kind would be best. I don't really want more fish, as I don't like hving an aquarium, but the other fish are still going to be around for awhile and I'd like a pretty fish to go in it.

Should I just continue feeding 1/2 wafer a day (and I do feed them at night)? I've only ever seen the smaller one eat the wafer and the other one is twice as big. Or should I give them a whole one or introduce other food, such as a cucumber?

I believe the fish died from inhaling too much air while eating. I searched around the fish section a little and that's really all I can figure. I'm going to just keep the plecos without getting any other fish but I had another question.

If I feed them veggies (just to change their diet) what can I give them and how much each day? I don't know if their size makes a difference. The little one is 3-4 inches and the larger one is probably 7-10 inches. I've only ever seen the smaller one eat the wafers, however.

Do you know why the goldfish died? They should live around 20 years if cared for properly. If the plecos are common plecos they shouldn't of been kept with the goldfish anyway because they like to eat the goldfishes slime coat off and can kill the fish. They also shouldn't be in anything smaller then a 55 gallon tank because of how big they get and how dirty they are. If the goldfish died because of something wrong with the water then you should fix that before you worry about what they need to eat since they may die as well. How much you feed the plecos really depends on how big they are, if they are still babies then 1/2 an algae wafer should be enough for now. You can start giving them other foods anytime you want, maybe a few times a week give them a veggie instead of the wafer.

If you decide that you want more fish, you should make sure your tank can properly fit them. Fancy goldfish need a minimum of 10 gallons each when babies, 20+ when adults. But since you don't even want an aquarium then what would be best is if you gave them away.

I'd stick with the 1/2 a wafer.

If you're tired of having an aquarium, maybe it would be easier on you AND them to just give them to someone else that might like them. You might even be able to find a petstore that would buy them back from you.

the plecos really dont eat fish poop, they are vegaterions and like the algae wafers, and will eat your plants, they will even like cucumbers!!!! They feed most at night in the dark. just keep doing what you are doing and they will be fine.
