Because they obviously don't take their job seriously and think that by doing that they can have easy pay.

In response to reereebsm, it is not always possible to get along with some students. There are kids with behavior or emotional disorders that cause difficulties with authority. This is neither the teacher or the student's fault, but must be handled by having a behavior plan. In that case the teacher does not "try to get along" because the student is learning to observe the rules of the classroom and school and act in an appropriate manner.
For students without such disabilities, I think that respect is a two way street. Many students come to class unprepared and are very vocally disrespectful of the teachers. While students should not be neglected, one effective way ( in some situations) to prevent such behavior is to ignore it. Not all students are like this, but many do have the attitude that they do not have to do anything in class except show up. Their attitudes are bad and they must be prodded, cajoled, begged, nagged and harped on in order to do the required work. Trying to do projects and group activites with students who do not want to participate results in several different chat groups where no work gets done.
The difficulty with answering this question is that you fail to specify exactly what you mean by neglect and lack of respect. An example would be helpful.

the lack of respect towards student can come up from three things -
1. Lack of Training - Teacher may not be trained well as she might expecting the results before the process. His/her job is to initiate the process of learning rather than expecting results.
2. Lack of Empathy - Teacher may be ill equipped to understand the diversity and various understanding level of the students. First thing he/she can do is to try to understand the background of each student and what is his learning process this way they can help.
3. Favouritism - This one is killer, it can make the teacher biased and that is the worst thing one can do being a teacher. Sense of equality and equanimity should prevail.
Students should let the teacher know what they feel about them otherwise they will never improve and if this actions means punitive measures then bunk the class and go for movies as I use to do.

Some teachers and children just don't hit it off. If a teacher doesn't care for a particular child they soon feel it then they start to rebel. Their behavior gets worse and the teacher gets bitter. I've worked at a school for twenty two years and I can honestly say I never worked with a child I didn't love. Some were easier to love than others, but love them I do. My favorite children are the toots. You know not to turn your back on them because they'll be into something. God bless their little hearts. It's the sneaky kids that kinda bug me because they get the toots in trouble.

In my opinion, ignoring infraction in the class is the best way to get on with the lesson without loss of time. Students inquiries like 'May I sharpen my pencil?, I didn't bring my textbook, May I take the chalk home? during the instuction are some examples of infraction and irrevelant to the topic discussed. Teachers lose most of their time in making students get to their seats and silencing them. Further waste is undesirable. But any questions which are valid questions but from another subject or another topic should be briefly answered and teacher should immediately get back to topic. Any questions from same subject but different topic should only be explained if it requires basic understanding of the topic. Any questions related to same topic should be answered next day even though answer is ready with the teacher. A exhaustive, sequential and thought provoking presentation of the answer could be given with proper preparation only.

Where do you kids get the idea that a teacher must respect you? Haven't your parents taught you that respect must be earned? It's not an entitlement like you seem to think.
When I observe the behaviors and language of today's students I wonder how any of my friends can continue to teach.
Respect you?! I will when you come to class on time with the tools you need...text books, paper, pens, and syllabus. When you have read the assignment and thought about it. When you listen and participate in the class discussion. When you turn in your home work on time. When you turn off your cell phone while in class. When you dress like you respect your body and what others think of you. When you stay until class is over.
Then and maybe then we will begin to respect you. After you earn it.

Teachers should respect students if they want to be respected in return. Respect begets respect. If you know that you have not done anything to incur the wrath if your teacher, then you have to talk to him/her about your concern. Do it in a respectful way. Sometimes , the approach of the student, puts the teacher in the defensive and the idea of a dialogue is lost. Show that you respect her/him.
