It is perfectly legal as long as you notify the public that they are being monitored by sound and vision !
A lot of public houses are bringing in this system to combat the use of drugs and it is legal as long as there is signs making customers aware they are being watched and listend to !

I am not sure what a Public House is, but I'll guess that you are renting rooms in a home. The question would be where the camera is placed, i.e. a living room, kitchen, bathroom or bedroom. If the space is rented out, you cannot place surveillance in the rented area without permission of the occupant, i.e. bedroom. If you are placing the camera in a laundry room that is common area, the camera is OK. Voice recording laws vary from state to state. Some states require that all parties are aware of voice recording while others state that at least one party to the conversation is aware. How do you make them aware? Some people would argue that posted warnings of audio and video recording are not sufficient and if you are renting then you include a notice in the lease. What if a person is speaking on their phone, in an all party state and you record it? That would be an illegal audio recording and you could be charged with a criminal offense.

Each person is entitled to a "reasonable" expectation of privacy. If they are renting a specific space there can be no audio or video recording in that space without the renters permission.

Common area maintained by the "landlord" is another matter, but my recommendation is to avoid audio recording. It is not worth the risk of an inadvertent recording.

Yes it is illegal, and it should stay that way. But the law is changing, and CCTV cameras you see around town (at least the ones in major cities) will be fitted with a new type of microphone that can pick up what you are saying, even if you are on the other side of the street.

It's shocking the way our rights and privacy are slowly being taken away, I feel like John Hurt in 1984. Just be careful what you say, big brother is listening, and once the technology catches up, it wont be long before they start spying on your thoughts. You think I'm joking? I really wish I was.

Yes it is legal as long as you display signs advising people that there is cctv with sound recording, make sure the signs are highly visible to anyone entering the premises.

Like what people have said before, as long as people are notfied they are being filmed and everything they say on camera, no problem.
Custody areas in Police stations are all CCTV and Voice recorded.

probably is legal, but who'd want it? sorry, can't be certain, but you could check public statutary rights - most government buildings have the same laws as you would regarding the public, and they would have to comply with any and all laws much more transparently than you would need to (Cuz who will REALLY know?! Or want to?!)

Accords what country & state you're in, there were cameras that had microphones in shops in America on cop & criminal shows such as America's dumbest criminals, worlds wildest police videos etc.
