Just curious.I have heard this term alot from different people. What does it really mean? When you stay indoors for a long time in bad weather can you actually lose your mind?Does your mind play tricks on you ?Do you find you would rather sleep than stay awake and deal with the same view of a snowy wasteland? What is the outcome of this and can it have long term affects on you ?Can you acutally lose your mind or lose touch with reality or just get depressed from staying in? What is the full problems you have staying in?

cabin fever means when you feel sick and bored of being indoor for a long time. It can make you somewhat crazy especially if you have no contact in the outside world.

Yes, Cabin Fever is an actual occurence that happens when you are secluded from society for too long. If you are with several other people in these conditions it grows stronger a LOT quicker. People have even killed one another because of their "Cabin Fever".

Harriet Jacobs was an African American slave who stayed in a garret (attic) that was only 3 ft. tall for seven years. Never leaving it until she could escape up to the north. She survived and went on to write of all her tales.

As far as long term effects, let me say this, I have definately had Cabin Fever before and it actually had a positive affect on me; it made me appreciate life and freedom more.

As an introvert I long for being in the situation that could cause cabin fever.......

My 89 yo mother in law....tells of being in Newfoundland in the winter while her husband was working on the railway and being alone in a cabin for months on end with a baby..........she's got a personality kind of like mine and it didn't phase her....but I suspect most people couldn't handle it......look at all the things that most people have to have around themselves to be entertained...they rely on others to do this for them and don't have the skills to occupy their own minds...those types would go batty quite easily.

Where I live in Newfoundland we really don't have that many sunny days....there are a lot of people I find that that really bothers. But again that's just some people....myself I prefer the cloudy days..... it's just the way I am

There is a real, serious condition called SADS, seasonal affect deficiency syndrome in which people who don't get enough sunlight become seriously depressed. It's a real thing, described in the DSM IV, master reference book of psychological disorders. It happens mostly in northern climates during the winter, which can keep people indoors and the sunlight periods become real short or non-existent for months. The cause is a lack of a brain chemical called seratonin, which causes the mood to elevate and brighten and is manufactured by your body when it is exposed to sunlight.

One thing that works is to expose yourself to full-spectrum light bulbs, the light from which is practical the same as sunlight and which you can purchase at Lowes or Home Depot.

It's a "mind thing". If you're at peace with yourself, you can stay indoors as long as you wish. Look at prisoners, they do it all the time. Then again, sometimes they kill each other.................
Umm, okay, maybe I should rethink this.

People in prison have gone inside just because of the confinement - especially solitary confinement
