I'm not buying into this debate again...lol
Seriously it really is a matter of personal opinion. People look at different aspects when looking at hero's of the game. Many played at different times with different advantages and or disadvantages. I'll be interested to see the answers.
Addition: Kasper we really are as fans, blessed to have witnessed or viewed post career some of the legends the game has produced. We owe them a lot.

At a minimum, the best player in the "history" of football has to have won at least one world cup. People who don't include Pele in their lists were probably born after the late 1960s. I did not get to watch him play but I've seen lots of his videos and I've spoken with some older people about him. These people are better judges, because they got to some both Pele and Maradona play. (many of these older people don't know how to use a computer, so they cannot comment on this question;))
- Hands down Pele is the best player of all time.
- Maradona is the best I've ever seen.

I agree with you Casper. I believe Maradona is definetly the best player in the history of the game his performances in the 1986 and 1990 world cups were both excellent. I also believe Zidane to be the second best player he has performed very well in big games like the 1998 world cup final, Euro 2000 final, Champions league final in 2002 when he scored the winning goal against Leverkusern. And he was also the main reason along with Ribery that France made it to the final in 2006. It is just too bad that people might remember Zidane for the one big mistake he made rather than all the brialliant football he played.

The greatest player I have ever watched is Zidane. Mind you, I have never seen Pele and Maradona play. And mind you, when you ask this question, I can bet you half the people who answer Pele or Maradona have never actually seen them play and know little about them outside their actually name.
Either way, Zidane was the greatest player I have actually seen play. He was so fluid in his play, so confident, and so deadly on the ball. It was a pleasure.
My favourite is either Paul Scholes or Eric Cantona. Two completely different players. Cantona would walk onto the pitch at OT with the belief that he owned the place and Scholes just went about doing his job.

The players playing now havent proved enough or arent good enough(ie. the Ronaldo's etc) Ronaldinho may well be on his way but not yet. Maradonna cheated against England in 86. Although I admired Maradonn's game, he still was a cheater. And yes he did play for Barca. I would say Zidane over Maradonna.
1. Zidane
2. Maradonna( even though he cheated)
3. Ronaldinho
