How about spending time at a local Retirement home or other charitable institution?
That way, your hobby is actually useful to someone other than just yourself. You will give these lonely folks company, make their day, learn a lot from them and can share the knowledge you gain from them (and this experience) with others around you.
How enriching is that!

My fav is scrapbooking. It's easy and cheap to start. All you need is the pics of you and your family or friends. Get some fun paper and stickers and a gluestick. Make an album and share it with those people. In the end you have used your time and finally done something with all those pictures!!! When I started I only had 2 albums for about a year. Now I have closer to 10 and I still love it.
Crochet is another easy to pick up hobby, You can make scarves and blankets for new babies. Again relatively cheap. I taught myself with a beginner book.
I hope you find something you enjoy. The best thing to do is walk around the craft store and see what grabs you. It could be the fun papers, cool stencils or fuzzy yarn.
good luck

I just took up crocheting. I really like it. It's easy and very inexpensive to 'get started'. I went to Walmart and they had this kit that came with 6 different crochet hooks and a how-to book with simple project patterns. Then I bought a skein of brightly colored yarn (it's easy starting out with a bright color because you can see your work better). Probably $15 total to get started.
Of course, when I got started, I couldn't really understand the written directions, so I searched the internet for videos to help me learn. I found this website:
http://www.nexstitch.com/Tutorials.html
There are also tons of free (easy) patterns on the internet.
These links have downloadable patterns in pdf format and you don't have to register to recieve them. I especially like the first link in the list below because there are patterns for baskets, baby blocks, a teddy bear, slippers, jars. Usuable stuff...not just blankets and pillows. And almost all the patterns are for beginners or are the 'easy' skill level.

The nice thing about crocheting is it is a craft you can share. You can make things for people-things they can use.
I know someone else here suggested knitting-I chose crocheting because it only uses one needle and I thought it would be easier to 'pick up' since I didn't have any experience with this sort of thing. But my understanding is that they are both easy. I will probably eventually learn to knit.
And you know, the other nice thing about these hobbies is that you can take them with you. They're easy to pick up and work on and then put down at a moments notice. I took a simple project with me to the doctors office to work on while I waited. When my name was called, I was able to immediately stop what I was doing, stuff everything back into my large purse and go on. I'm getting a perm for my hair next week and I am taking my crocheting with me!!!!
Have fun and good luck on whatever you choose to do!
EDIT:
Oh yeah...there are also programs where you can crochet/knit items for people in need. I know at the patons website, they have a program for making caps for newborns in under-developed countries. And I know there is another program where you can make afgans and blankets for the needy in the US (if you are from somewhere else, I am sure there are programs there as well).

I say that you should start knitting. I taught myself about a year ago and it keeps me entertained on trips or just when I'm sitting on the couch watching t.v. There are "how to" books that you can pick up at your local library or you could sign up for knitting lessons at your local craft or yarn stores.
Knitting is so much more than toilet paper covers these days! Check out the website for some really hip ideas!

k books are:
skinny by ibi Kaslik(you will recognize it by the popsicle on the front)
fix by Leslie Margolis, it has a girls face on the front with a nose bandage
Lush by natasha friend(it has a girl in white on the front)
and for crafts i recommend making picture frames
at michaels you can get jewles glitter sea shells etc. and glue and if u can find a plain frame such as white or black and rhinestone it or make it look like it should go in a beach house it would be really cool in your room!!
another hobbie would be to cook, just try new stuff...i tried a pb&j sandwhich with marshmellow whip and bannannas and it is my favorite now!!
and for the last one, if it doesnt sound boring to u(its ok it does to me) you can take up knitting or crotcheting
you can make stuff for your friends and you and you can have something to do when your at home and are bored enough to do that!!!
Hope you like the answer!! :) :)

I am into scrapbooking and as long as you are organized, it will not be overwhelming. Get out your pictures (start with the most recent ones first), go to your local craft store, pick out a scrapbook (start small until you get a feel for it), pick out papers that go with the pictures (i.e.; if you are on the beach, get paper with a beach setting). Then get some stickers that go with the paper, and get started. Add embellishments and brads to make the page really POP! Crop the pictures by cutting out the unnecessary background goings on....it is FUN and ADDICTIVE! Its a great addiction to have!

Try doing latch work or cross stitch. If you go to Michael's craft store, you can buy some neat stuff to do. When your finished, you can save them and soon have a craft box.

http://www.craftster.org/forum/
i like it cuz a lot of the crafts are very inexpensive using "recycled" materials (example: make a purse out of an old book)...and there are lot's of cool/trendy things to make, it's definately geared toward younger craftsters....have fun!
