You're going about it right, stay near Minneapolis, but not IN it. I live and work in Minneapolis, I don't reccomend living in the city to anyone.
The suburbs are fine, all are close enough to "night life" unless you go for the far suburbs like Rosemount. Personally I don't find the night life here all that great, but I'm from NY originally. It could also be I've mellowed with age and simply less interested in night life then I once was.

Just don't move to Columbia Heights, Brooklyn Park or Brooklyn Center. There is more crime there. And Edina is one of the most expensive suburbs. Maple Grove is really nice but a little far. Eden Prairie, Bloomington, Chanhassen.

Eagan, Edina, Hopkins, Apple Valley, Eden Prairie. Those are the best ones. Bloomington has more crime.....I personally prefer the north metro over the south metro myself. I wouldn't live in South Minneapolis at all!!!!!

Maplewood has a lot of nightclubs including the newest one Myth. It also has the large Maplewood mall. I live in Woodbury and we don't have any nightlife so cross us off your list!
