I haven't noticed the Church of the Internet dedicated to the actual Internet being a divine being. Nor have I heard of anyone worshiping the Internet, HTML (the language of your proposed god), or that magical box we call a computer.

By definition God is a divine being that is beyond the existence of man. So that means the product of man cannot be a god. However, since god is actually a mythical creature and the Internet is a real world item then by that definition it can 't be god either. A god’s powers are derived from sources that are unreachable by humans and exhibited in ways that are hard for men to understand. By that definition the Internet is hardly a god. Its powers can be summed up by the word communication, making them clearly defined. There is nothing that you can do on the Internet that you cannot do in person; it just takes a whole lot more time and money to do them, so anyone can use its powers or duplicate them. The Internet clearly runs across telecommunication lines between computers all of which are built and controlled by man.

A divine being by nature is one that is able to produce miracles, and miracles are events that normal men cannot duplicate or produce. Anyone can learn HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language); there are a lot of program packages and online tutorials that can help. Since HTML is not owned by any company anyone can learn it or use it. HTML is the software heart of the Internet so it is open sourced and therefore useable by anyone who can learn it. The hardware of the Internet is hardly unique and is produced by many different companies. Anyone with a computer and a connection can use the Internet; in fact it is very hard to PREVENT someone from using the Internet. Gods are always exclusive beings unique to the believers in that brand. The Internet is anything but exclusive and you don’t have to have any special beliefs or swear to anything to use it.

According to Robert A. Heinlein "Gods have the morals and manners of a small child." The Internet has absolutely no morals (nor do many of its users), because it has to behave its programming it has very good manners (although a few of its users don't). The Internet may be young, but in computer generations it is quite old and has changed little except in performance for the last five years. So it seems to escape that definition as well.

Ultimately a god has a personality, and the Internet does not. It has no feelings, no desires, and no wants. It has no agenda, no goals, and no plan. Even its design isn’t constant and is totally under the control of man. It can grow, change and adapt, but it can’t grow or change without the direct intervention of its operators, and its ability to adapt is simply a communication protocol designed into it. In no way is it a being never mind a being as powerful as a good.

So by any definition of god I know the Internet fails to meet the qualifications to be one. However, religion is a freedom of choice and if you want to worship it then feel perfectly free to do so..

No, the internet is not God, some people may be addicted to the internet and worship it like it is a god but the internet is not God.

If you worship the Internet then maybe for you it is God. But if you believe that a God or Godlike entity must help people, provide a haven for faith etc then i don't think i would be praying to the Internet real soon :)

I think it was sometime in mid-century. Someone prophecies that someday there would be one supper computer in the world. Some say that, as things turned out, the opposite is true with a computer on every desktop. But with the Internet connecting computers, maybe that prophesy is coming true.

I think it is one of the modern gods - People have always derived gods from significant aspects of their life - gods of love, war, order, chaos, alcohol, rivers, mountains etc. nowdays we are too technological to think in those terms but we are unconciously doing the same thing - in this case worshiping a technological aspect of our lives.

I think thats a cool question. The internet holds sooo much information, it could have a soul, like you know how people talk about the akashic records, its like that. A human memory bank thing.
