No they're not complete idiots. It's very easy to get sucked into something that sounds like a miraculous solution to all your problems. Brainwashing is sometimes very subtle and very hard to resist. Scientology certainly employs brainwashing techniques to recruit and keep members.
When people first get involved, they probably aren't aware that Scientology is a cult. Not everyone can be expected to know this (though in these days, the information age, I expect that more and more are becoming aware). Normal, curious people can get sucked in just as easy as "complete idiots".
Cults like Scientology are extremely harmful. To remain within the strict mental & social confines of a cult for even a short time can have the following disastrous effects:
Loss of choice & free will. Diminished intellectual ability, vocabulary & sense of humor. Reduced use of irony, abstractions & metaphors. Reduced capacity to form flexible & intimate relationships. Poor judgment. Physical deterioration. Malnutrition. Hallucinations, panic, dissociation, guilt, identity diffusion & paranoia. Neurotic, psychotic or suicidal tendencies.

No it's not a requirement, but I can understand your question, with Tom Cruse (who fits that description) in the forefront it can be mighty deceiving.
