There is no theoretical limit (other than the speed of light) but when the speed reaches the speed of sound it will create shock waves. The blast from a nuclear weapon is created by shock waves due to the hot air in the fire ball expanding faster than the speed of sound. Euler's equations govern the motion. see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euler_equations
