I would recommend Maui, it is beautiful, easy to get around, lots to do and several beautiful beaches, fun restaurants such as Bubba Gumps. Sheraton on Kanapali was very nice but expensive. Kuai is also beautiful, but not alot to do especially with kids, lots of beautiful scenery.. Waikki Beach is nice, however, a bit commercial. We spent a total of 2 weeks in Hawaii 6 in Maui, 5 in Kuai and 2 in Wakki. I loved Maui the most. When I go back to visit, I will definately look in to renting a condo. Have a great trip and a safe on too.
PS-I would recommend the Lonely Planets Guide for Hawaii, it helped alot with our sightseeing time.

'The island of Kauai. It has some of the most beautiful scenery you will ever see on the interior of the island and some great beaches on the south end of the island. This is the oldest of the islands and can be a bit cheaper for accommodations than let's say Maui or even Oahu. If this is your first time to the islands avoid Honolulu and Oahu. Honolulu is huge, hard to get around and very touristy. The Big island is very nice as well, not crowded, easy to get around and have a some good beaches around the Kona area.. I'm not bashing Maui, as it is awesome, but it can be expensive, but they have some of best beaches, especially in the Ka'anapali area north of Lahaina. Have fun.........

Kaua'i is small but very beautiful and easy to get around if you have a car. It has great beaches, snorkelling, hiking, and dramatic scenery. Many films have been shot there including Jurassic Park because it has such varied landscapes. It has a real Island feel.
Big Island was too big - too much time spent in the car and too "American". I'd only recommend it if you want to go to the Volcano National Park
Aloha!

Oahu is the island that will be cheapest with Waikiki and Honolulu
but very busy! Kauai is probably the most expensive, northernmost and the oldest, lushest and quietest. Great diversity on the Big Island but you'll need a car and moderately expensive. Maui is middle of the road in all respects.
Have Fun!

I have visited 3 islands of Hawaii, my favorite is Maui, they are all pretty expensive. If you rent a condo you can have some meals in and save money.
