How much closer to the poverty level will the middle class be?

I wonder if those making 9.00$ and hour are going to get a raise. It's just plain out stupid to raise the minimum wage. No one realizes that it's going to do absolutely NOTHING! People who actually worked to get say 8.00$ an hour are going to be making close to what someone who just started a job is getting. It's a little odd.

As I understand it, the poverty level refers to the ability to pay for some level of goods and services given a person's income.

As a result, people in the middle class will not be moved closer to the poverty level, because the amount of goods and services that they can consume will not (necessarily) fall because of a change in the minimum wage. Their incomes may become closer than that of the poorest working members of society, but they will not (necessarily) be pushed into poverty.

The only wrinkle is that economists believe that increasing the minimum wage may create inflation. So, if the middle class' paychecks do not rise at the same rate as those making minimum wage, then they may be made a bit worse-off than people making minimum wage because their paychecks are flat while the cost of buying a Big Mac may go up. Still, people in the middle class wouldnt fall under the poverty line.

The middle class gets closer and closer to poverty every year under Bush. "Real Income" has gone down each and every year the last 5-6 years. That had nothing to do with minimum wage going up.

I thought you conservatives said we didn't need to raise minimum wage because only 5% of the country was making minimum wage. How is raising the income of 5% of the folks at the bottom going to put the middle class in poverty?

Even if the minimum wage goes up to $7.50 and hour, you will only be able to buy the same thing that you use to buy for .50 cents, when the minimum wage was .50 cents. People still can't support a family on that , but it will make it harder for students and part time workers to get work. People supporting a family need real jobs and education.

$4368 closer to the poverty line...that's how much the new minimum wage will give "poor" people in a year...and that's how much of the middle class's income will be devalued...people in America don't understand what poor is...especially liberals...to them poor is not being able to afford a counselor...people should see the poor of other countries before they complain about how "poor" Americans are...how many "poor" people in America have cars, TVs, DVD players, PSPs, 3 meals a day, clothes, etc...

it affects so few people... it's real effect on the overall economy will be very small...

for those that do make it, it will be welcome...

and one side question... this will increase spending which will help the economy... those people getting paid more will be spending more to make up for it...

and if the businesses get a tax break too... I don't see it hurting anyone...
