Eric Clapton has recorded numerous pop-rock hits in his career, but back in 1965, he considered himself a blues purist, and didn't want to play mainstream, Top 40 fare like "For Your Love." He was replaced by Jeff Beck.

The group's move into pop outraged lead guitarist Eric Clapton, at the time a no-holds-barred blues purist, who had already doubted the ability of "nice college kids" like bassist Paul Samwell-Smith to play the "real blues". Clapton left the group in protest, subsequently joining John Mayall's Blues Breakers.

The reason Clapton left the Yardbirds was because he was not keen on the direction the band was taking, which was more pop-oriented with songs like "For Your Love" (written by Graham Gouldman a pop songwriter-for-hire). Clapton left and joined John Mayal and the Bluesbreakers, which was much more of the blues sound and direction that he wanted to stay with. Before he left, he recommended Jimmy Page to replace him, but Jimmy didn't want to give up his job as a freelance session musician (and he'd had health problems touring earlier in his career), so Jimmy in turn recommended Jeff Beck (a childhood friend). Thus, Jeff Beck took over the reins when Eric Clapton left.

I don't know if it was different interests in music, egos or what but Eric left and formed the group Cream.
