i believe there is no such thing as choice. . You can't choose; who you will meet tomorrow; your true love; what you dream about when you are sleeping; who you like and who you dislike etc etc.

For me choice is a word that simply confuses issues and by implication suggests that responsibility lies within the individual.

i don't use the word choice - i use the words prefer or select

so is there such a thing as choice?

Agree that choice is not a word that can be used liberally. To what extent would you want to be able to choose who you meet or what your dreams should be. You do have a choice albeit not straightforward as to who you hate. Choice actually simplifies issues, assuming that it is the right time to make a decision and that human nature is so straightforward as to stick to that time and decision. As the word exists you don't have to prove its worth. When issues fall to the individual then the world becomes smaller and hence choice is used to indicate that the interaction of the person becomes important. I would say that there is a choice with regards to true love, true love doesn't exist in my book, nor does love at first sight, people choose their partners, by the proportion of decisions made on an individual basis, there is such a thing as choice, its use is restricted, you can't choose the type of weather for example.

Well have a look at other unfortunate people in the World such as the people in Darfur - then reconsider your question. You can choose where you live, you can choose to take a day off. Life is made up of our choices - which you may call 'selections' or 'prefrences'. It is the same thing , just because you don't like the word, it doesn't mean you can get around or elimnate the word. You just choose a different word to describe what is the concept of choice.

First you have to remember what choice means. If there are two or more alternatives to something then you have to make a choice or selection (whatever you wish to call it) Most things in life do come with alternatives and by selecting one over the other what else are you doing but choosing! If like dreaming (which is beyond our conscous control) we have no alternative but to dream.
Responsibility for an individuals actions when he has alternatives lies with that individual. You have a choice to be good or bad and others cannot make that choice for you!
Perhaps all you need to do is learn what in life comes with choices and what doesn't!

There is always choice. It's just you never get to choose what to choose between. And a lot of the time people use that as an excuse to make the wrong choice. Responsibility does lie within the individual, just not only in them.

I truly believe that You create your own luck, you create your own destiny, you create your own meaning for this life, and by default everything serious that happens in life is automatic, and I find great encouragement and security in that. I don't have to worry about death! I don't have to worry about aging! They happen naturally and thus don't require my thought! Amazing. Everything you wish and intend, consciously or subconsciously, comes to pass in some respect or another. So in a way, having a dream and experiencing it as though as it is real, is as good as experiencing it because either way your mind will be translating that feeling and that's where it lies in the end. And what you focus on, you attract. And using that ability to focus on your hopes and dreams and forgetting about the negatives in life, for the most part. Simply living positively and doing the best you can with the mind you've been given are simply phenomenal gifts we can do to make our lives amazing. The only things needed are persistance and optimism, and you'll never go wrong in the end. Only when you mentally say, I quit, have you failed, otherwise you'll always be able to recoup in some manner or another. I promise that.

Of course there is. If there were no choice in life then we we would all be on some predestined path. That would go against most modern religions and political beliefs.
In ancient times people thought that their lot was preordained by some higher power. This belief suited those at the top of the tree and kept the less fortunate in their place. These days are gone and you can chose how you would like to live your life and work towards that gaol.
Hey sometimes we can't achieve all our aims but that shouldn't stop you from choosing to work toward it.

Of course there is such a thing as choice. Life is not predetermined. Consider it from a religious point of view - God gave us free will, thus meaning that we can do as we please (even if it is not the right decision). Why would responsibility not lie within the individual? living life like we have the possibility of blaming a determined path is foolish .

Choice must exist. Without choice there would not be a free market. The free market depends on the choice of buyers and consumers. Democracy relies on choice, maybe not so much of the candidates, but of the issues they bring to the table.

I believe there is choice.

However, I also think that choice is more of a refinement or your own restrictions than anything else.

Each choice we make closes many doors or potential, though at the same time, it also determines the availability and nature of future doors of potential.

You get to choose the rules of the game so to speak, but you do not get to choose the outcome.

Free will vs determinism is what you ought to look into, if you want to know what people have been saying about this question for ages. (take note of the philosophical impact of quantum theory) It is easy to live in a deterministic universe, because you do not have to choose. But believe me, someone is making choices for you if you do not accept or take advantage of the opportunity. Personal responsibility grants the highest level of free will.
