Is it a computer or a laptop?
Laptops may have hibernation settings configured. Or you may have a dying battery.
For either, look at your power settings. (Right click the desktop, select properties, screen saver, power, and verify your settings are set to a number above 15 or set to Never.) Also check the Advanced tab and uncheck "Prompt for password when...".

Look in the Control Panel under Power Options, Advanced. The notebook is probably going into Standby after 15 minutes and prompting you for a password. You can uncheck this option.

To choose a power scheme
Open Power Options in Control Panel.
Under Power Schemes, select the power scheme you want. The power settings you see will change depending on the power scheme you choose.
Notes
To open Power Options, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Power Options.
Preset time settings appear in the Turn off monitor and Turn off hard disks lists on the Power Schemes tab.
You can change these settings by clicking the arrow and then clicking the time you want.

This is the way I set up all my computers to avoid your problem.
First; Go to -->
To open Power Options, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Power Options.
Power Schemes- ALWAYS ON
Turn off monitor- NEVER
Turn Off hard Disks-NEVER
Standby-NEVER

If it is shutting down by itself (not logging off) it's probably a bad power supply. A relatively easy repair.

If you have a laptop, it's probably running low. Check that out. Laptops do that so you don't lose your information.
