The most common gynaecological prolapse occurs after having children and the pelvic floor muscles become stretched. This allows the bladder to press downwards, giving a bulge in the front wall of the vagina which can either be felt as a 'bearing down' feeling or noticed by a degree of problems with holding on to urine when coughing or sneezing -'stress incontinence'.

Less commonly, the back passage or lower bowel may press down, which can give rise to having the bowels evacuated. The womb, or uterus, can also push downwards, and if, as can happen in older women, the whole womb prolapses so that it is outside the vagina, this is known as a 'procidentia'.

There are a multitude of different techniques for dealing with prolapses, depending on what the type and degree of prolapse and therefore it is not possible here to detail what the operation planned for you entails or what the complications might be. I would suggest that you either go to your own GP, who should have received a letter from the gynaecologist, explaining the treatment proposed for you, or ask the hospital if you can have a further appointment with the consultant to discuss at further length your operation.

If you are not keen on the surgical option, this would be well worth looking at. If you do have surgery, losing weight prior to it would give you a quicker recovery and would prevent the prolapse from recurring.

It's called prolapse. Probably from having babies. If it is bothersome, you can get a vaginal hysterectomy which is a surgery to remove the uterus through the vagina, so the healing is much faster than if you had it removed by the abdominal approach
