Good question
Germans have always prided themselves in their desire to be the best at everything. Look at WW2, the Mercedes. The list goes on and on

I'll tell you, I went to europe and all I knew was Sesame Street spanish and a little bit of german that I remembered from high school. I was disappointed that I wasn't going to get to try out what little I knew so I could impress my friends until we came upon a German man who might have helped us and I totally froze. I spent the next hour berating myself for not saying the words I now had the time to piece together.
I think when people are in a different community where the language is a barrier, they use it when they can for their own education and pride - and I think that most Americans don't even try to communicate in any other language and should generally keep our mouths shut when someone else displays the courage to try a foreign language. Don't you agree?
Peace!

I find the opposite to be true. All to often Germans who know English refuse to speak it.
I studied German in School, and whenever I have to opportunity I try to speak German so I can learn the language better. Maybe they are trying to do the same.

I don't know which Germans you are speaking to but, I am impressed with many German's English speaking skills. They are far better at speaking English than I (and I'll bet you too) are at speaking German.
