just practice your free throws.. build up enough muscle so that you can shoot 3 pointers no jumper.. and when you get the ball don't be afraid... show your coach that you can be responsible with the ball.. and don't be afraid to drive it into the lane... and when your running suicides don't run full out but run fast enough so that after the practice you dont have enough energy to walk n'e more... and during practices and in games call for the ball nice and loud.. all of these things should impress your coach and have u starting in no time !! believe me I score at least 20 points each game.. good luck !

Most coaches like to have speed on their team. To find this speed, they like to run a lot of drills that include stamina as well. You are going to get really tired, and you should expect this.

The first thing you should do, is to start some plyometrics exercises. Set up on a bench and jump on and off as quickly as you can. Make sure you're feet are barely touching the ground before you jump back on the bench. Do this in repetition so to increase your speed and vertical jump.

The second thing you should do is to make sure you can control the ball. If you can't dribble then you should not tryout. A coach doesn't want a player that can't control the ball. To improve your ball handling take a ball, and practice walking with it while dribbling. Always remember to NEVER look down at the ball. This defeats the whole purpose of the exercise. You must be able to dribble equally as well with your left hand as your right. Try to increase your speed to a jog once you've mastered the walking portion. Always look for ways to increase the difficulty of this exercise so to improve yourself.

Third, defense will always be mroe important than offense. Always remember that. People will say this is untrue because offense is more exciting than defense, but the key to a good offense is a good defense. To improve your defense, you have to adapt to a defensive position. This position is extremely difficult, but you will get used to it. First, keep your back straight as you can, and crouch. Make sure your butt is sticking out and your head is up. Then, keep your hands out to your sides (This is to block passes). Make sure you can move easily in this position. It is extremely important yo can do this. Always practice this. Try moving diagonal, backwards, forwards. It is really important to remember to never let your man get behind you.

Fourth, you must practice your free throws. Go to a basketball hoop everyday, and practice free throws by shooting 100 each day. You should be able to make in at least 75. Don't worry if you can't just keep trying. Make sure you have a form or "ritual" at the foul line that focuses you. Remember: These are free points so you have to capitalize on them.

Fifth, rebounding is another important aspect of the game. Take a basketball to a hoop, and bounce it off the back board (Don't hit rim), and jump up and tap it back up. Keep doing this until you can do 15 in a row. Try to aim for more each day.

Sixth, you have to be aggressive. Paint points are the highest percentage baskets in the game, but to get there ou have to be able to force your way in. Before this though, make sure you can make the shots. Practice layups by aiming for the white box on the backboard, and shooting up close. Alternate sides and make in 90 out of 100. Layups are when you run and make in one of those shots. Try these each day, because they are important component of your offense.

Seventh, you have to be able to reach the basket from three-point range. Take just a few of these shots each day because you don't want to become used to them. They are last resort. Basketball coaches don't like it when you aren't agressive and would rather stay off to the side and shoot from there.

Eighth, practice with another person. Play one-on-one games, and try to utilize the techniques you've learned. Remember that they won't take it easy on you so be prepared to screw-up. It is not bad to make a mistake, but next time try to fix it by practicing it.

Remember the key components:
Speed
Defense
Foul Shooting
Agressiveness
Lay-Ups
Rebounding
Three-Pointers
Ball Handling

Practice, Practice, Practice. You have to be ready to commit to working hard if you want to impress the coach.

You could try: http://www.angelfire.com/extreme3/basketball_life/ or similar sites. Around where I live, the big thing is attending basketball camps. Also, just listen to the coaches; that's what they are there for.

practice the fundamentals. know your role: center, sg, pg, etc. focus on the specific training that would help with your position. like if you were a pg, practice your dribbling & ball handling skills. also, coaches like ppl who show effort. i hate it when my teammates aren't aggressive, especially since none of them were in foul trouble.
