Well if you don't turn your comupter on and off all the time on purpose then it is okay. Shutting down computers
at night and on weekends saves significant energy without affecting
the performance. If a computer must be left on after-hours, turning off the monitor will not affect the program that is running, but will save 75 per cent of the total energy required to run the computer. You should turn off your computer whenever you're not using it, it reduces heat generation.

I've had an IBM desktop for 10 years, another no-name desktop for 2 years, and a laptop for a year and we startup and shutdown all the computers once or twice every day... and I have never had any problems related to this.

if you turn it off properly through the start menu option then nothing will be harmed - but never shut down with the button unless its an emergency - i did it one too many times and i had to pay 100 dollars for a Windows reinstallation

cheers
