When filling in a pool is it as simple as just putting dirt in there or are there other steps?

Seal all drains. The fill should be compacted every 2 foot to
prevent settling.About 6 inches of screened topsoil on top.
Grass seed and that should do it unless you want to build anything in this area.If you decide to build something then you will need a compaction test and add a rebar mat over the entire area.
Do not bury stumps or large rocks because that will create sink
holes.
Good Luck.

There are other steps first is to remove the old pool then you have to decide what you are going to back fill with. when you back fill you need to compress the layers. there are several different ways to do this.

Well... depends. You could remove the pool structure first for best results.
