I am thinking about going back to school and am seriously thinking of training to become a registered nurse. I am 27 and do not want to take four years of schooling for something I may not be right for. Any feedback is welcome!

You could try some volunteer time at the local hospital. That way you could see the enviorment and the patients and get a bit of the feeling if this is something that would be good for you. We have a number of people who come for nonmedical jobs and use the benefits to advance to nurse. I have also had a couple who spent a great deal of time and money only to discover that they couldn't finish the course because they have a difficult time with the "uglies". If you don't do well as a volunteer, well, no harm, no foul, but you will have your own answer.

You should be able to have genuine empathy and compassion for people. Nursing is an extremely high pressure job but also could be very rewarding. I'm not a nurse but have watched them a lot and I admire how they do their work. (my husband is a cancer patient.) There are the different areas to specialize in but I've seen nurses move to a different area just for something different to learn and do.

Unselfishness, patience and the abilty to LISTEN! Add to that genuine caring and compassion for people. The ability to think fast on your feet in stressful situations and be able to be professional at all times. Willingness to follow directions and stay organized when other people are generating chaos. It's not a profession for whiners, believe me!
