Websites, and search engines are just like newspapers, television and movies, they use advertisements.

Websites like myspace sell ads (if you look on the page there is always a huge banner advertising something), and search engines probably do some of that too, but they also get paid by websites to put their particular website on the top of the list of results when you search for something.
