I personally found Valerian very potent, taste and smell...not in a good way. Chamomile alone worked better than Valerian. You can combine the two, which may reduce the offensiveness of the Valerian but I have never tried.

Valerian root or broken capsules are both ok. I would try it first on a day that you do not need to get a lot done. Some people have remained overtired the following day. - Personal preference I would drink down the capsule with the chamomile tea.

I buy plain Valerian root that I add boiling water to, creating a tea. I'd imagine opening a capsule is fine.
You can mix with chamomile

actually herbs are often best when used as a tea (definitely avoid the pill form)...
you can mix the two however I would recommend not drinking valerian on a regular basis...give your body a break from it once in a while...
