I just bought a house that has a fireplace in the living room. Running across the bottom of the fireplace is a gas burner with 3 openings (narrow slits across the top). The gas control is built into the front face of the fireplace in the brick. Is this type of fireplace meant to be used with the ceramic logs laid in the rack? Or is this just meant to be used as a starting aid for a wood fire? Every set of gas logs I've looked at contain their own burner.
This is a fully functioning fireplace, and you can see that the previous owners have burned a wood fire in it. I'm just trying to figure out the best/proper way to use this fireplace. Every place I've had before just used a standard wood fire.

You have described a 'gas igniter'. Open the flue, add wood logs and start your fire.

Per code it is not legal to have a gas or oil burning appliance
venting out in the same flue as a wood stove.The gas or oil will start the creosote
from the wood burning in the entire chimney.This gas appliance
can only be used by itself with ceramic decorative logs.Somebody
must have converted this fireplace to gas burning fireplace.
To be safe you should have the chimney cleaned real good be-
fore using the gas.

sounds like they used it with wood and gas together (less wood needed to get nice fire). If you have ever been to Cracker Barrel, that is how they use their fire place. I would rotate the pipe (if you can) so wood ashes can't fill up the slots.

not really sure what he means the gas stove exhausts into the house air while the fireplace exhausts into the chimmney

they do make gas burners to aid in firestarting. i would recommend having a specialist look at it to confirm. hope this helps.
