ive heard that if you buy really small angelfish and raise them in a community tank they will usually be fine. even if they are say with...guppies. Is it true? i have a 29 gallon tank, will they still go after teh guppies once they mature and gte to their adult size? or will they be fine if there is enough room? will it change anything if i buy them small and they grow up with teh guppies? are females less aggressive?

They're fish and go with their instincts - if they can catch the fish and swallow the fish, they'll eat the fish. Unfortunately they won't form a brotherly comradeship if they are raised together.

The thing about angelfish, is that once they reach sexual maturity, all bets are off. Yours might all get along, then they'll start to pair off and become very beligerent to the other fish. Even if they don't pair up, there is always the possibility that your angelfish will be more agressive as adults.

Also, you need to factor in the bio load. Just how many angelfish do you plan on getting? Three adult angelfish are going to top out the bio load of a 29 gallon tank. In other words, the mass of the angelfish will exceed the beneficial bacteria that breaks down the waste the fish will produce.

And they are omnivore. So while they are not strictly fish eating, I wouldn't be surprised if your guppies start dissapearing when the angelfish get bigger.

And no, females can be quite aggressive. Not all females will always be aggressive all the time. But they can be as aggressive as males. And if you have a mated pair, both will vigorously defend the eggs and fry.

buy 6-10 young(3-4 month old) angels & raise them in a large tank. 29 gal is ok. They will eventually pair off for spawning. You might get 2, possibly 3 mated pairs out of 10 or 12 fish. The taller the tank, the longer their fins will grow-as long as water is clean.Long, straight fins get higher prices with collectors/breeders. Do not forget angels are cichlids-they are aggressive w other fish, especially smaller ones, ie guppies.Female angels r as aggressive as males when it comes 2 hunting, feeding. Unless the tank is VERY large, your guppy population will get wiped out. I hav almost 44 years w freshwater trops.

That should work out just fine. Angelfish don't usually eat other fish,(except their own young)but they do get territorial as they reach maturity. This involves more chasing and keeping the other fish cornered in one end of the tank.------PeeTee
