It's the code to where post is sent. Is that not fairly obvious?

Well I'm not sure what your asking - not sure you know what your asking. The UK post code is a string of characters added to the address of every building in the country which are unique to that building or that block of buildings. If it is written correctly on each letter it allows the mail companies to use a computer to read the code and then sort the mail to speed it on it's way to the correct destination. Therefore it follows that in the UK there are thousands and thousands of different postcode and if you want a specific one you need to tell us a specific address - there is not just one post code for a any whole city/town It is also used by many other companies in the UK to determine specific areas - for instance car insurance companies use the post code to determine the risk in the area you live and amend the payment accordingly. Also delivery companies use it with a computer to work out the best route for the delivery truck to avoid covering the same roads twice.

Your question is not enough to answer accurately, because it is unclear whether you are asking for a post code which will identify the UK as distinct from other countries or whether you are enquiring what the concept of a UK postcode is.

As far as a post code which will identfy the UK, that varies according to the country you are in.

As far as the UK postcode system is concerned each building or group of buildings is identified by a two-part group of letters and numbers.

The first section of the code identifies the major postal delivery area and will include letters which are readily identifiable -- eg EH for Edinburgh, AB for Aberdeen, IV for Inverness and up to two numbers which either identify the area of the city or the smaller town from which the delivery will be made eg EH3 or IV18.

The second part of the code consists of a number identifying the village or group of streets and then then two letters identifyiing a particular group of houses eg 2BY.

The code would be written in the form IV18 2BY.

It corresponds to zip code in USA.A post code can narrow down an address to a few houses. E.g if you did n't know someone's address you could send a letter..

Mr A N Other
LL56 4TF
This would probably reach its destination because out of the few houses there, there would probably be only one A N Other.

A code for postal delivery, like the American zip code.

The first two letters indicate the postal area, the first numbers indicate the region in the postal area, and the next set of numbers and letters are the specific house or street where the post must be delivered to

It's a 5,6, or 7 character code for the Postal service to use so they can send on our mail to the right address.

it identifies which street or part of a street to deliver the mail to.

there are several large roads in my area with the same name so it helps the postman out.
