I was always told when I was young that I was going to make a great teacher but I decided to do something else. I have an associates degree in arts - graphic design and I'm currently getting my BS in Business Administration. I currently work for a well know prestigious lending institution BUT I don't like the corporate politics and I feel that my personality doesn't mesh well in the corporate. I will graduate next year and I've been thinking about teaching. I know it politics involved with everything that you do but I want to do something that makes me feel good and that I'm helping someone. Also, I'm very tired of Corporate America. So is this a wrong reason to wanting to teach?

LOL LOL LOL, If you think there is politics involved in corporate america and are tired of it, you will not last in a school. You personality is key to being a good teacher. Will you be able to handle parents, administration and teachers blaming you for everything? Can you handle that responsibility knowing you will have no authority or funds to do what you are expected to do? WIll you be happy knowing you are paid less than anyone else you graduated with. Will you be able to continue to go to school for further education and then have your school board deny you raises? There is only ONE reason to be a teacher, that is because you love to teach children more than money and you are willing to put up with a world of nonsense to do it.

Yes, believe me there is a lot of politics in the teaching field. I have definitely experienced that as a teacher, however, I love teaching and became one when I was 48 because it was a desire I had my entire life. I too was very fed up in the corporate world. The wonderful thing about teaching is of course the children. If you can ignore the negative stuff and concentrate on the fact that you are doing one of the most important jobs there is you'll be fine. You truly make a difference when you teach.

If you're looking to get away from politics, it's not a good idea to get into teaching. It's the very reason good teachers get out of it (and end up in Corporate America). However, if you're looking to make a difference and KNOW you'll be a good teacher, then go for it. Some people get into teaching for the summers off. You're not that person. :)

I am a high school teacher and the primary reason why I went into teaching was to make me feel great & help others. At the end of last year when kids were signing my yearbook telling me about how I changed their lives and how I was (one of) the best teachers they've ever had--nothing can top that! I cried like a baby at graduation seeing my kids cross that stage.

Yes, there are politics involved at schools, but you can choose just how involved you get. My #2 reason for teaching was that I hated working with adults--you are in your own little world (your classroom) and don't have to deal with much nonesense if you don't want to. Go for it!

I, too, was always told that I would be a good teacher. When in college I decided to go towards the only thing I had ever been around...finance. After getting through my junior year I decided that I was going to take a change and do Sociology. My direction was going towards gerontology until I worked in a nursing home the summer before I graduated. There was no way that I was going to change majors then. So, I graduated and two weeks later started my Masters in Education. I am now a 5th grade teacher in my seventh year of teaching...and LOVE IT!! I should have followed what everyone told me years ago...I would have saved a lot of money!!!

GOOD LUCK!

Not at all! I am studying to become a teacher myself. I have been in the fire service for a few years, and I am tired of the politics involved also. I've always wanted a job where I could truly reach out and help touch someone and teaching seems to be the way to go.

I think those are actually some GOOD reasons to teach. While there are politics in any group of people, including teachers, the fact that you want to do something that you can feel good about is important. I say go for it!

The really nice thing about teaching is that it is easy to ignore a lot of the politics if you focus on your students. Make them a priority, enjoy thier company and the opportunitites you get to facilitate their learning.

there are always days as a teacher that leave you wondering if another job, like working in Wlamart, wouldn't be a better bet, but as you develop relationships with students and watch them grow, the rewards become apparent.

Good luck with your decision.

It's a great reason: what it boils down to is that you have tired of the woprk you have been doing (this is normal in any career) and you are looking for something deeper that will hopefully create meaning for you. You are hoping teaching will do this: well good luck! It is a worthwhile profession and you have life and professional experience to offer your students - lucky them!

It sounds like a perfect reason to me, wanting to help people is a very selfless act and you can never go wrong trying to help and improve the lives of children.
