you need a new belt

its' more than likely the belt, the clcking you hear is the clutch locking up wich would then engage the transmission.
get a few towels lie them in front of the machine
unplug the machine ( make sure there is no water in the machine )
tilt foward until it's resting on the face and you can clearly see the bottom
you see 2 belts, 1 small and 1 long
chances are one of both might be burnt ( they are shiny and thus do not properly hold on the pulleys buyt slip )
they are easily removed as the pulley tensinors do not have that much tension. you can manually pull back the tensionner and rotate the belt to verify lock up of the transmission, it will move around the drum as it's supposed to, this is how you know it's the belts. as a general rule of thumb replace both belts even if only 1 is needed, the belts however will set you back about 50.00 or so for both of them.

Sounds like it could be the motor coupling. It is composed of two plastic pieces that sandwich's a rubber piece. The purpose is to prevent the motor from burning out if the machine is overloaded. It is located between the motor and the gearcase. Lift the front right side of the machine up, look for rubber debris on the floor. They are easy to replace. If it is Kenmore or whirlpool the part # is 285753 and be purchased at any Sears Parts or Whirlpool dealer.

Hiya maybe the spindle has gone, alternately u need a new belt. Depends how old the machine is also. Nowadays machines last 5/8 years. The price of parts and labour nowadays its beter to get a new machine. Good Luck

We just had a similar problem with our washing machine and had a repair-man around. Essentially, he looked at the brushes, motor and logic board on the machine to find that one of the circuits had blown.

Turned out that it was cheaper for us to buy a new one (which we have). But it from what I gleaned from him it could have been:

- brushes
- fan belt
- logic controller (for want of a better word)
- motor

if you can manage it, unplug the machine, take off the back, maybe about a dozen screws, you should be able to see a large wheel and a small spindle.
if there isn't a belt connecting one to the other, look in the bottom of the machine where the remains of the drive belt will be.
fairly inexpensive part and easy to replace if you or someone you know is handy.
best of luck.

Hi, If the clicking noise also accompanies the dial going around, cud be just a safety system kicking in. When did u last clear out the drainage filter? try that first.

Sounds very much like the drive belt has snapped. Not a very expensive item to buy. Replacing it should be reasonably easy on most modern machines.

Remove back panel and see if the drum belt is broken.

If its a kenmore, whirlpool, or kitchenaid it has a piece called a motor coupling. Its between the transmission and motor. It cost around $15. Other brands use a belt or two.
