Cheese, Peanut Butter

Peanut butter or snickers candy bars work. Cheese dries out too fast to be good for a trap. Preferably something firm enough that they set off the trap trying to get the food out.

Remember that rodents follow walls by keeping their wiskers on the wall. Set the traps next to a wall.

Peanut butter: Despite the cartoons, mice don't really like cheese unless there is nothing else, and peanut butter can't be dragged away from the trap.

you can use peanut butter it works just fine , no need for any thing fancy. make sure you are using rat traps as mouse traps won't work for rats.you need to know that rats are shy of anything new ,,they wont come near it for up to two weeks. keep this in mind. also try to put the trap at the location the rat is getting it to the house, if that cant be found then place it where you see it traveling.you should also try to find the entry point on the exterior of the structure and seal it. use steel wool or copper wool ( scrub pad ) hope this helps
