Honestly, if you phrase it like that you can get only one response: If you can hear them flying, then you must have the ears of a bat. Most people can only hear them quacking.

But to answer the question you meant to ask... Many species of migratory bird fly at night because the air is cooler and it lowers the risk of overheating. It could also be as simple as being startled by a predator. (The latter may be more likely in your case because ducks seem to quack less during their migratory flight).

On nights with a moon here in MIssissippi, I hear geese flying over the house a lot. There are many large lakes and ponds around my city and the Ross Barnett Reservoir is about fifteen miles northeast of me. By the light of the moon reflecting off the ponds, lakes, or rivers, the geese can make their way safely from one location to the other without fear of being shot down by hunters or preyed upon by hunting dogs when they land. Most hunting dogs are penned up at night except coon dogs.

Are you sure about this, because when ducks fly any distance , they navigate by the sun, (when there is sun). I have never heard of this before. At night, ducks come out of the water and nest down on grass. banks.

Interesting question but I don't think it means anything. Both geese and ducks will fly at night I've heard them too.

Depends. Was it a Full Moon - lot of light, early morning to them and a late to you, what season - a migration going on, or duck season? Or something could of scared them and they took wing.

My guess - and this is only a guess, mind - is that it means ducks are flying. Either that, or this is a harbinger of Armageddon.

Perhaps it's to do with the crazy weather? Or bad timekeeping on their part...

It could be because something has disturbed them, or that the weather is about to change in some way.
