I love Garcia Marquez too, my favorite novel is "a Hundred years of solitude" (Cien años de soledad).

I recommend Ernesto Sábato ("Sobre héroes y tumbas"), Julio Cortázar ("Rayuela" or any of his short stories) or maybe Mario Benedetti ("Gracias por el fuego"), also Vargas Llosa and Octavio Paz.

There are great novels by Isabel Allende, as you must know, but her best yet is "The House of the spirits", even if the movie adaptation was crap.

I hope you enjoy them, and if you'd like to check out other Non-latinoamerican great writers I suggest you read a play by Federico García Lorca or anything from José Saramago.

PS: I strongly don't recommend Coelho.. I personally hate his "Self-help" kind of books.

I agree, Gabrial Garcia Marquez is amazing. One Hundred Years of Solitude is a master pieces. But my favorite is Chronicas de Una Muerte Anunciada.

Borge is very good. So is Carlos Fuentes and Isabel Allende.

I do like Garcia Marquez very much. I found I enjoy the Brazilian writers also.
João Guimarães Rosa wrote the great epic novel "Grande Sertão: Veredas" (translated as "The Devil to Pay in the Backlands")
João Ubaldo Ribeiro: Sergeant Getúlio; The Lizard's Smile; An Invincible Memory
Jorge Amado is one of the best known Brazilian writers, celebrating the vibrant city of Bahia above all.
I like Rubem Fonseca very much, too: "Bufo & Spallanzani" and
"Vastas emoções e pensamentos imperfeitos" ("Vast emotions and imperfect thoughts") are available in English translation.

Mario Vargas Llosa, particularly his early stuff. His autobiography is not bad either. Miguel Angel Asturias is another good 20th century Latin American novelist.

Try Julio Cortazar or Jorge Borges, maybe.
