You can not see the moon in the UK tonight because it was a new moon yesterday which means that the moon is on the other side of the world at the moment.
The bright flashes you saw were most probabily the Quadrantids meteor shower which is seen at this time of year.

The flashes were Chinese anti-sattelite missile tests going wrong. The missiles went off course and struck the moon, shattering it into a thousand pieces which floated off into space.

portion of the illuminated hemisphere of the moon that is visible to an observer can vary from 100% (full moon) to 0% (new moon) it is now in its waxing stage, which explains why we cannot see anything at all, but eventually in a few days we will see slivers of it appearing as new moon phase

if something was wrong with the moon, the people on the sea would know first. Something to do with it controlling the ocean or something like that. No biggy right?

Could be meteors, otherwise known as shooting stars.
They often occur in showers.
Another possibility is space debris, doesn't have to be the Chinese satellite, there is a huge amount of junk up there.

It was a new moon, so it wasn't visible at all.
It maybe hadn't been seen for 5 days because it's so bloomin' cloudy!!
