Get a large enough trap, made for rats.

Wire a walnut meat to the trigger so it won't come off easily.

When you set the trap, put it right up against the wall with the longest side towards th wall.

first off get rat traps instead of mouse traps. a meat bait will work as will just about anything food orientated. second rats are shy of anything new in there environment, and can be for up to 2 weeks. this is why it didn't catch it immediately. you must put the traps under the sink by the hole the rat has probably made. the pipes for the sink have probably been enlarged to accommodate the rats coming and going. with the traps in that spot it provides the maximum opportunity for the rat to encounter the traps sooner than later. I wouldn't recommend chocolate as bait, peanut butter works just fine.. the Idea of the wood at the bottom of the door is a good idea to keep the rat confined to the kitchen area. you should be able to get the rat, then you must fine the hole and plug it, copper pads or steel wool will work.you didn't say what kind of structure this is, but you should find the exterior entry point and seal it as well

A poison such as 'slaymore' or 'neasorexia' does the job but do NOT use peanuts with these as they contain vitaminK which is the antidote for the poisons.; The bait comes in sealed bags that the rat will eat through and cost about £1 each. Put 2 or 3 down in the runs of the rat and it will go off and die.

if it a rat a mouse trap isn't big enough to kill it. You need a bigger rat trap and bait it with bacon. The rat has to tug to try and get it off and will spring the trap thus killing it. The the nasty job of getting rid of it. I prefer D-con. They eat the stuff and go somewhere else to die. You can tell if they are eating by the amount in the tray. Hate to tell you that if there is one, there are probably more you aren't seeing. Be on the look out for their droppings. They'll also chew their way into cabinets, food boxes, etc.

Use peanut butter. It is like rat crack. They like it. Try putting the traps (make sure they are RAT traps) along walls where the rat is seen on a path if applicable. They are active at night mostly, but can be active indoors at any time. Go to this website and you can get some excellent ideas from there.

If he has seen one rat then he has lots. They breed like...er..rats. You need professional help - an exterminator. Traps won't be any use until they get used to them and rats are cunning. they'll send their weakest to test anything new. If you try poison you might end up with rats in the toilet. The stuff dehydrates them so they don't rot under the floorboards. They go for the nearest water supply and drown.
You also need to find how they are getting in and block it. You will need mesh, glass fragments and concrete as rats will chew through anything to get to a food supply. I have a neighbour who had rats tunneling through a cement floor to get to his chickens. not good for me as they seem to have set up a colony in my woodstore though my siamese has been getting the young ones.
then you'll have to work out where they are coming from and get onto the council about it.
As for the nail in the door. Mr Rat will get anywhere he wants and will chew whatever he wants including wiring. watch out for fire. Luckily for me the worst I've had in the house was mice. now they can't get in.

on account that they're wild rats they are able to unfold sickness and be risky to have on your living house. For starters, use snap traps rather of sticky traps, sticky traps are merciless and animals will in many situations chew their own legs off to objective and get out. Snap traps injury the neck and kill straight away ninety 9% of the time. to assist preclude rats coming in, be helpful you clean all cabinets very properly, depart no lines of crumbs, positioned issues into plastic bins rather of cardboard/paper packaging, and plug up any holes that the rats could desire to get by (they are able to squeeze by truly small places)

He should be able to contact his local council environmental officer regardless of whether he is a council tenant or not. Rats pose a serious health risk & they will be equipped to deal with it. I dont know if it is a free service but will be cheaper than a private company. They will also deal with the problem quickly due to the health risks such as leptospirosis etc
