It's another silly French word, invented in Paris about 1765 according to the Oxford English Dictionary.

It helps (a little) if you consider its original French meaning, which was 'a restoring place', so: 'restaur' plus 'ant'.

It gives me grief (the spelling) constantly, and it's one of those words that are so crazy that if you don't know how to spell it you can't even get close enough to get a near-match on an electronic spell-checker.

Restaurant. You could always use spell check, it's right above where you put in you question. Or go to google.com it tells you the correct way to spell it, even if you spell it wrong!!!
