i know that the protege is basically the next model of the 323. i am wondering if a 1.8 liter engine from a 91 protege will fit in my 1987 323 (current engine is 1.6 liter)

It sounds like It would be based on that you might have to get smaller pulleys, radiators and-or different engine mounts. I would recommend that if you are looking for more horsepower , change valve specs and add a turbo and electric water pump , just enough like to cruise with confidence not like a FAST and the Furious one.

Real not worth it.... But I'll explain better choices

MX 3 DOHC 1.6 and the protege 1.5 will both fit with chances to transaxle mounts... But no power gains from this swap.

Best swap is the MX3 V6 if your going too do the transaxle mods
and you can get more HP from this setup also.

If you find a DOHC LX engine you want you will need to modify the strut towers also. Would be best to Sell and By a Better car.

If you can find A Rally 323 Turbo You'll be MUCH happier with that setup.....

Thats enough said....
