Have you thought of being a service underwriter at a dealership? Perhaps, a parts person? There have to be jobs related to your field that would pay you for your experience without making you go 'under the car'. Sit down and write down every possible job that could ever be (even side ways) related to mechanics and see if any of them sound appealing.

How about a handiman at an apt complex? You are obviously good with your hands.

Apply with the city's/county's maintenance department or, grounds department.

School districts pay well, too.

Imagine yourself doing what you really want and go for!
Don't cut yourself short!

Have faith in yourself and good luck!

Teaching, like the first person said would be a great field to get into. You have all the knowledge and experience needed to help newbie mechanics go out and make a future for themselves.

Would you consider being a teacher???

Have you gone to your local employment centre and registered for over 40 job hunters course. Are you computer literate? What other experience do you have besides being a mechanic? Are you open to going back to school? Do you speak other languages? What do you like to do in your spare time? Have any hobbies you could turn into a small business?

Good point from the first answer. Many colleges or vocational school desire to have tech experts like yourself with the knowledge and experience to teach others.

Check with your local schools, colleges, and technical colleges.
