Check your newspaper classified section for dogs available and check the Internet for dog breeders in your area.

Taking care of a dog is a great commitment requiring great responsibility. You have to study about dogs in general, and your specific breed, as well as learn how to train it, feed it, and care for it properly. And you have to walk it daily, play with it, groom it, make sure it has its license, vaccinations, and all that is going to take time and some money. A cocker spaniel or Chihuahua would be a little easier and cheaper than a larger Labrador.

If you don't mind an older dog you could contact your local animal shelter or your local branch of the ASPCA. Check the link below to find the ASPCA that's closest to you. If they don't have what you're looking for you might either find another dog you like or else you can keep checking back with them. Eventually they may have one for adoption. This is a better alternative than buying from a breeder or pet shop since the dog is already spayed/neutered, had his shots and checkup and, since he's likely older, is probably already housebroken. Plus you're giving him a new home and second chance.

If you're set on having a puppy (and there's nothing wrong with that) you can check the newspaper or local pet stores. They'll probably be pretty expensive if you go this way. You might also try an internet search. Just type in your state and the breed of dog you want and you'll probably find quite a few breeders.

Good luck!

Make sure it is okay with your parents if you get a pet. Then, if it is, you might want to have them check with the local animal shelter. We adopted our Lab-mix from our local shelter a couple years ago and I can't imagine our family without him.

Good luck!
