I have a 2 yr. contract with Nextel/Sprint. I'm moving to Oklahoma from California and when I was in Oklahoma last summer I couldn't call out, because there were no Nextel towers in Ok.
I want to get out of my contract with Nextel and switch over to Cingular. My friends have Cingular and they live in Ok. They can call out in their own home. Help would be appreciated.

Talk to them. When I had Sprint and I moved, they said since there wasn't any reception where i was moving, I could get out of the contract. Or, a funnier way if they choose to be jerks. When you move, call EVERYDAY and complain about how your reception "is very fuzzy" and that you "can't hear a thing". My brother did that when he moved to Hawii, and eventually (2 weeks) they got so tired of it and said that he could pay $10 dollars to cancel it ( instead of the usual $150) ...If you have to, talk to a supervisor or someone with alot of power, maybe they can help. Good luck...

You should be able to get out of your contract because you are moving to an area that doesn't have Nextel towers. That is a general rule with most cell-phone companies. It should be written in the back of your contract too. They may need a prove of residence at OK, like a bank statement or a utility bill. Just call them and ask for a manager and be firm and they should be able to wave the cancellation fee for you.

Before you switch to Cingular, check very very very carefully the coverage area. I just finished a 2 year contract with Cingular. I didn't have the money to buy it out, so I paid for it for 2 years--unable to use it at home or most places in southeastern Oklahoma. The mountains block the signal and the cell phone companies refuse to share towers. I had to drive 8 miles south to the top of the mountain or 17 miles west to a small town before I got coverage. If you plan on doing ANY travelling to my part of the state, be aware that you won't be able to use Cingular down here. I switched to US Cellular and can use it anywhere.

call *2 or *4 (i am not sure which) if you are already there and cannot dial out, Read over your contract.
most have a clause that states that it will cost you $175.00 early termination fee (and maybe more if you got the free phone)
Consider moving with it to be sure that they have not installed any new towers in your area before you think about getting the service terminated as it will cost you a great deal.
YOu could always call them and explain your situation but I doubt that they will let you out of your CONTRACT free of charge after all, that is what a contract is.
YOu would however have better luck if after you move you fill out the change of address card and THEN call them and tell them the situation....
ALso I hear that the early termintation fee is prorated so see if the fee could be less than the $175.00 fee that is on MY contract.
Whatever you do, DO not, NOT PAY IT, when you sign up you have to give them your credit card. It will definitely affect your credit if you choose not to pay
GOOD LUCK ON YOUR MOVE

Unless the contract has an out provision for moving out of a Nextel area, you're stuck...UNLESS you were underage when you signed it? (Long shot, but a lot of underage folk on Answers)
Otherwise, you'll be on the hook for the breach provisions ($250 seems to be the rate I see on those contracts). Crunch the numbers and see if it's easier to pay the bill for 18 months or pay the breach sum.

You may have to buy out your contract. Unless prior arrangements are made with Sprint/Nextel.

Call and explain to them that you're moving into an area that doesn't cover Nextel/Sprint...
If that doesn't work, pay them their $150 - $200 fee to terminate it...
If that doesn't work, throw the phone down as hard as you can onto the pavement and just walk away!

From my understanding if you move and the carrier has no or poor service you can be released from your contract.
