after normal driving why do cars make a popping noise when its parked after driving it? you can sometimes hear it on cars that has recently been turned off. sounds like mini pops or drops or somthing from under the hood.it stops after about 20 mins or less. i know its normal becuase i hear alot of cars doing it when i be in parking lots walking by them. whats that noise?

It is called either bad timing or back up in the exhaust. Most likely though it is caused by a bad timing in the engine. Usually though, it only lasts about 10-15 seconds.

most of what you are hearing is due to the catalytic converter cooling down after operation,often engines will pop & creak while cooling down...........dont be concerned........theyre not gremlins.
