Total immersion works most effectively. Spend time in France or French speaking Quebec. Otherwise, engage in speaking French with a native speaker often. Language is a matter or practice and use. Your brain needs to be processing things in French in order for you to start understanding French better. People talk about a moment where they switch over and start thinking in the other language.

You need 'ear' lessons. Go to Quebec for the summer and your brain will take it all in automatically...no effort at all.
